I adopted a female and a male Australian Cattle Dog and we have been blessed to have them as part of our family. To the right is a picture of my new Australian Cattle Dog. This was taken during his trip home from the Lehigh Valley Humane Society. His name is Tazz and he is awesome. If you are considering adding an Australian Cattle Dog to your family, you will want to learn everything The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the many herding breeds. They are one of the most versatile breeds of dog in existence today. The breed originated in Australia and was bred for endurance, herding abilities and toughness. They were developed to heel (bite at the ankles of cattle) in the Australian Outback and have gained popularity all over the world. Hayley Australian Cattle Dogs are extremely intelligent, loyal and affectionate and are protective of their family, home and territory. They make excellent companions and respond well to firm, gentle training. They have a great amount of energy and stamina and require lots of exercise. Australian Cattle Dogs are also loving, playful and always willing to please. Australian Cattle Dogs have very strong herding instincts and will try to herd or round up the family. These dogs can be very good with children but since they are herding dogs and herd by nipping and biting, they need to be supervised around small children. With firm training Australian Cattle Dogs will learn not to bite at people. These dogs do very well in the show ring and obedience training. They are very loyal animals and will do anything to please you. The Australian Cattle Dog is considered a medium size dog weighing around 35 to 45 lbs. They require minimal grooming including bathing, brushing and nail clipping. The Australian Cattle Dogs are also known as Blue Heelers, Red Heelers, Queensland Heelers and Hall's Heelers. There are both Red color and Blue color Heelers. Dakota
Although the Australian Cattle Dog was bred to be a herding and working dog, they also make very good pets. Just keep in mind they need lots of exercise and training. In disciplining them they must be treated firmly but gently. It is most important to stress that the Australian Cattle Dog must be treated with respect and in turn will give you the same courtesy.
